I started out life as a very healthy child. I loved sport, often entering biathlons and represented my school and county in various swimming and athletics meets. However, this was all to change. Aged 14, I became so ill that for over a year, during my GCSEs, I was unable to attend school. I lost a significant amount of weight, had no appetite, no strength, debilitating fatigue, severe IBS, headaches, migraines, insomnia, repeated bouts of tonsillitis and infections and no capacity to study. Despite numerous GP consultations, tests and prescription antibiotics, my health continued to decline. I was advised by my Head of Year to go down a year at school as the teachers felt it would be impossible for me to catch-up; something I adamantly did not want to do.

It was at this point of desperation that a friend of my mother’s, recommended I seek help from a Naturopath based in York. In the 1980s, seeking help outside mainstream medicine was almost unheard of and was also not looked particularly well upon. In essence, my mother was swimming against the tide of popular opinion and placing her hope in something that she had no knowledge or understanding of.

The Naturopath I saw was an older gentleman who had been in practice for many years. My overriding memories of him to date, include his warmth, kindness, gentleness, sense of humour and his understanding; qualities that had been missing in my numerous GP appointments. He took the time to listen to me and understand my background, my health struggles and my needs. He also took the time to listen to my mother, who was at this stage frantic with anxiety. I left my first appointment with a plan that introduced simple dietary changes and relevant medical testing. However, more than anything, we left this appointment together feeling hopeful.

Despite being unwell, I was easily able to follow the simple dietary and lifestyle instructions that I was advised to make. I had an appointment approximately every month for a year. At each appointment, my diet and lifestyle goals were tweaked to accommodate my changing needs. At the end of the year, my health had improved significantly. I had regained strength and within a few months, was back in full attendance at school: I did not go down a year. That summer, much to everyone’s surprise, I passed all my GCSEs and proceeded to study for my A Levels. I then went on to train to become an Occupational Therapist, working with clients with a host of mental and physical health symptoms.

My training and past experiences helped plant the seed to retrain as a Nutritional Therapist. However, the trigger to action this plan came as a consequence of the death of my best friend from breast cancer.

My friend was one of the bravest, feistiest, fun loving, kindest and most intelligent people I have ever had the privilege to meet. She fought breast cancer for 2 years, undergoing numerous bouts of chemo and radiotherapy with vigour, strength and positivity. She died exactly one month after her 42nd birthday, leaving behind 3 beautiful children. During her treatment, she often wondered if there was anything else that she could do to improve her health. She spoke about other patients that she knew, who were actively changing their diets. I knew how greatly my health had improved many years previously with simple testing, nutrition and lifestyle changes; however I did not have any training or knowledge and felt powerless to help. After my friend died, I felt compelled to retrain so I could truly help others like my friend and myself.

You may have been unwell for some time, your medical history and symptoms may be complex, your illness debilitating and making changes may seem like an impossible hurdle to jump. However, in the 25 years since I first became ill, evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine has blossomed. The science base for our profession is strong and society has become more accepting of the power of nutrition.

I am a professionally trained and Registered Nutritional Therapist. I studied at the renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition where I completed ION’s 3-year Diploma Course with a distinction.

Brunel University: BSc in Occupational Therapy

I am a qualified Occupational Therapist. I completed my training in 2003 at Brunel University, where I attained a First Class Honours degree (BSc). I am registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine

I am fully insured and a member of The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine BANT

BANT is the professional body for Registered Nutritional Therapists. As a BANT member, I am fully trained to understand the theory of Nutritional and Lifestyle Therapy and to apply this in clinical practice. In addition, BANT practitioners are also required to ensure that their knowledge and skills remain up-to-date through continual professional development, to ensure clients receive the most current scientific knowledge. Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council

I am also registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council CNHC which is the national voluntary regulator for qualified complementary healthcare practitioners.

This accredited register is approved by the Professional Standards Authority (a government approved independent body). CNHC registered practitioners are required to abide by a Code of Conduct, Ethics and Performance. In addition, practitioners also need to meet national standards of practice.

Career History

I am a Registered Nutritional Therapist and run a clinic in Epsom where I consult on a one-to-one basis with individuals experiencing a wide range of health concerns. I have a special interest in working with clients with diabetes, fatigue, cognitive impairment and auto-immune disorders.

I regularly attend conferences, seminars and webinars to ensure my clinical skills and nutrition knowledge remain up to date, in line with the rigorous CPD requirements of our profession.

I am also a qualified Occupational Therapist, and have worked with clients with a multitude of health concerns and needs. My work involves assessing and analysing clients’ vocational, leisure and self-care needs and ensuring appropriate intervention protocols, training, adaptations, equipment and support are provided to meet these needs.
